2017 In-Service Training & Members’ AMC Retreat Summary
AMC partnered with the Islamic Seminary foundation (ISF) and the Muslim Endorsement Council of Connecticut (MECC) in organizing the 7th Annual National Shura 1438 & In-Service Training for Chaplains, Imams & Other Service Providers to the Muslim Community on March 25, 2017 in New Haven, CT followed by an AMC Members’ Retreat.
The theme of the Shura was “Service to Humanity 2.0: Best Practices.” Dr. Rami Nashashibi from the Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN) was this year’s invited keynote speaker. Additionally Dr. James Jones graciously provided the second keynote address, titled “Black Lives Matter Because All Lives Matter,” due to a last minute cancelation. Insha’Allah a recording of both talks will be made available to AMC members shortly. We were also blessed to have a number of chaplains presenting best practices drawn from the Shura’s first call for proposals. A full Shura program with topics and speaker information can be seen here. Chaplain Kamau Ayubbi led the Members’ Retreat which focused on providing members with spiritual rejuvenation and meditation tools for use in their work.
During the AMC Annual Meeting onsite, recognition awards were given to Chaplain Shareda Hosein for her contributions to AMC and the development of the field of Islamic Chaplaincy, Chaplains Omer Bajwa and Kamal Abu-Shamsieh for their contributions to the development of the field of Islamic Chaplaincy. Members of the Executive Board also provided updates on developments in the field and within the organization and results of the election were also made public.
A change in venue to the Yale Divinity School allowed for much appreciated complimentary parking on site and classroom spaces better able to accommodate participants. In addition to establishing that new relationship, the gathering provided the opportunity to deepen our relationship with ACPE which was represented by its president-elect Dr Amy Greene.
AMC would like to extend warm gratitude to the many volunteers who worked tirelessly to make the gathering such a success: may they be generously rewarded for their efforts.
If you attended and have photos we would be most grateful if you would share them with us at Communications@AssociationOfMuslimChaplains.org
